About Us

The band was formed in October 1993, following the shooting death of Waterbury, Ct. Officer Walter Williams and began performing in March 1994. Our ranks are open to all with Police Officers from many different Police Departments in Connecticut as well as civilians. We are an organization that owes allegiance to no single department or special group. We wear a traditional Scottish full dress military uniform with feather bonnets, military sporran and full plaid. Our tartan is the Scottish National Tartan-Modern. In summer, the band frequently wears a modern summer weight uniform with military style shirt and no feather bonnets.

For most performances, the band presents 12-14 pipers and 6-8 drummers. For the most part the band sees its role as that of a traditional musical unit ready to perform in parades, concerts. weddings and funerals in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York.

Our goal is to serve the Law Enforcement Community in this capacity and to be the best that we can be ........ in performance.

The band has been incredibly successful. In addition to winning numerous prizes in parades throughout New England, the band has been invited several times to perform at the U.S. Military Tattoo at West Point, New York. Also, for the past several years, it has performed at the U.S. Capitol for the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. during National Police Week. The band is a featured unit of this police memorial in our nation's capitol each spring. In 2004, the band was selected to plan and execute the entire memorial for National Police Week 2005 and band members eagerly planned and organized special performances for this prestigious event designed to honor police officers and their families everywhere. This is the second time the band was selected.

The band is certainly receptive to new members with piping and drumming skills, however, we also have an aggressive teaching program. We encourage anyone to join us, Law Enforcement Officer or Civilian, who is willing to work hard enough to achieve a standard of musicianship acceptable to the band. If you have no skills, but have the desire and willingness to make a commitment to learn, we can provide excellent instruction. We practice weekly on Monday evenings at the A.O.H. Club in Waterbury, Connecticut. Visitors are always welcome. Contact the band at president@policepipesanddrums.net, for additional details.
